South Korea has the best English-Dubbed shows of any country

🥇 1st Place = #SouthKorea has easily produced the best #EnglishDubbed #Netflix shows of any country. Their narrative vision, character depth, creativity is so amazing I’m considering watching their non-dubbed shows with subtitles. Southern Korea is best & it’s not even close.

5️⃣ 5th Place = Turkey has what may have been my first ever dubbed series — #TheGift (or #Atiye).

Other notable shows include #OpenYourEyes (Poland), #Followers (Japan), #Nanno (Thailand), #TriadPrincess (Taiwan), & #TheThreePercent (Brazil).

Hoping there’s eventually a dubbed version of #TheRationalLife (China)

Korea’s Religious Pluralism

I’m surprised no shows have highlighted South Korea’s religious diversity. The historically peaceful coexistence of major religions in South Korea is a great example of pluralism to include with the globalization of other narratives (Lee, 1999; Shin-Ho Choi, 2017). The major faith affiliations in South Korea are Buddhism, Christianity, and no affiliation. Moreover, Islam increased by 32% between 2002 & 2012 (Young-Dae Yoo, 2012).

Religious Support: Gender as a Contingency (Jong Jung, 2014)

Gender role socialization can provide a sophisticated rationale for the gender differences in the direct and the stress-buffering effects of religious attendance. The socialization of females tends to stress submission, nurturance, and caretaking whereas men are socialized to value aggressiveness and independence (Francis, 1997; Mol, 1985). Due to different emphases in the socialization process, women are more likely to develop interpersonal skills than men. This may result in women making more and stronger interpersonal relationships than men within the church as well as in secular settings (Krause et al., 2002).

In addition to the direct effect of religious attendance, the stress-buffering properties of religious attendance also emerge only among women in South Korea. Gender inequality in Korean society results in wide discrepancy in resources between men and women. Lacking resources with which to cope with stress, women are more likely than men to rely exclusively on religion — religious attendance — to draw consolations (Ross and Mirowsky, 2010). Put differently,

religion may be more important as a resource for women than for men. Moreover, women may be more skilled than men to ask and receive assistance from others in times of adversity.

This is in line with research finding that prayer reduces the effects of stress on depression only for women (Mirola, 1999; Wang and Patten, 2002).

Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) made history this year at the Oscars, when she became the first woman of colour and the first woman of Asian descent to earn best director at the Academy Awards. This was also the first year ever that two women were nominated for best director. In fact, during the 93-year history of the Oscars, only seven women have been nominated in the director category, including 2021 nominees, Zhao and Fennell.

Lego Toys
Following a global survey commissioned by Lego and conducted by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the Danish company announced they’ll take steps towards removing gender-bias in their toys and marketing, including stopping the use of labelling toys ‘for girls’ or ‘for boys’.

Lego will also work to expand the diversity of characters and roles represented in their products, in the hopes of every child being able to identify with the toys.

Afghan women speak truth to power
On 15 August 2021, Kabul fell to the Taliban, drastically impacting the lives of all Afghans, especially Afghan women and girls. Girls are banned from attending secondary school, women are unable to continue work, and violence against women is on the rise.

Against all odds, many Afghan women took to the streets in protest. Others persisted to speak out in different ways, to safeguard their human rights. One delegation travelled to New York to participate in a series of events and high-level meetings at the United Nations Headquarters on the sidelines of the UN Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security. The group, including parliamentarians, women’s rights advocates, journalists, civil society leaders, and researchers, called for women’s full and equal participation in humanitarian assistance, peace efforts, and governance.

COVID & Violence Against Women (UN Women)

“From the early days of the COVID lockdowns, women’s organizations noted a significant increase in reported cases of violence against women. Now, a new report from UN Women, which brings together survey data collected in 13 countries across all regions (Kenya, Thailand, Ukraine, Cameroon, Albania, Bangladesh, Colombia, Paraguay, Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Morocco, Jordan, and Kyrgyzstan), confirms the severity of the problem.”

Ronaldo & Surrogacy

In June 2017, he had twins via a surrogate — Eva and Mateo Ronaldo. Just like their older brother, the four-year-old twins were born in San Diego.

The announcement shocked many, given that surrogacy comes with an exorbitant price tag (commercial surrogacy is actually illegal in Australia, but common around the world, particularly the US) and Ronaldo, still a young man then, had a girlfriend at the time.

The process can cost up to $100,000, but given Ronaldo’s reported pay packet of $93 million, that’s hardly a splash in the pool.

“Cristiano Ronaldo will not share any reason as to why he chose a surrogate mother, he is simply grateful that he now has twins,” a rep for the soccer star said in 2018.

Manhattan fertility expert Dr. Joel Batzofin told The Post it’s rare for single men, especially straight males, to choose surrogacy.

“Most people do surrogacy as a measure of last resort,” Dr Batzofin told the publication.

“I’m not going to tell you it’s hugely common but I [do] see it now more than I did five years ago.”

Then just a month later, Ronaldo announced his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez was pregnant with his fourth child.

Make sure you’re using higher criteria than you’d use looking for a roommate off of Craigslist. And preemptively go to a couples therapist too. That will help immensely in new relationships trying to figure out how to communicate more effectively in a shared space.
